Simply stated, my furniture is a vehicle for 3-dimensional paintings that appeal to your sense of vision, touch and functionality. Dedicated to the creation of dynamic living space, I create furniture that makes a statement. There is juxtaposition between the simplicity of the structure and the complex layering of color, texture and design. Using traditional compound miter joinery the furniture is built from Baltic birch and enhanced with leather upholstery, nickel or wood hardware or vellum shades. The surfaces are painted with acrylic mediums and finished in lacquer. I offer a full range of home furnishings from cabinets, tables and lighting to accent pieces such as mirrors, pillows and ottomans. They are painted in four basic design groups: Treatment, Introspect, Fifteen and One-of-a-Kind. Each has its own character but interplays with each other in color palette and spirit. Treatment is a graphic layering of color and implies the affect of treating the wood with color. It also reflects the way life treats us or requires us to be treated – medically, emotionally, spiritually, etc. We draw upon our history and our foundation to deal with these complexities. We become introspective. The Introspect series reflects my Japanese heritage. Life is intricate and although we try to balance it all, we can never see all issues clearly at all times – there is no perfect. Fifteen was inspired by the rock garden at Ryoajin Temple in Kyoto that reflects this Zen Buddhist belief. Each of these pieces has fifteen elements, all of which cannot be seen from any one direction. The One-of-a-Kind group is a free flowing composition of color simply imparting energy and accent. |
